I recently posted an article on my Facebook page (www.facebook.com/thrivehealth) which lead with the line “Huge Victory against GMO’s as Monsanto Driven out of the UK by Consumer Protests”. I posted this so others could read the article, and posted the comment “Great News for the UK Consumer!”
I anticipated that most people would read this, as I did, and celebrate a very significant victory in keeping corrupt and unethical organisations like Monsanto out of the UK farming and food industries (they have had a hugely detrimental impact of farming practices and the quality of foods in the USA, not to mention a damaging effect on the farmers themselves!”
I did get one comment, though, that read as follows:
“uh.. just a thought, how do you think we can feed the population without some level of GM crops?”
I read this and immediately began to correlate the many responses that i could give to this, in my head (I read this on my iPad when on the tube train so couldn’t bring myself to write a simple, short or flippant reply that I felt would not really do this justice). So here I am, taking time out of my Saturday afternoon to reply and post this as a blog right here too.
Here is my response:
“I could answer this question on a number of levels Duncan but I could start by asking you a question in return; Do you REALLY believe that Monsanto are in this business to FEED THE WORLD? If you are under this impression i suggest you take a look at some of the things that they have been up to over the years and how much of a negative impact they have had on the American consumers, American Farmers, the Health of the soils, and the longevity and sustainability of the farming practices there!”
– if you didnt quite get my subtle hint there, here’s the blunt version – MONSANTO ARE IN IT FOR THE MONEY!!! Not for our health, NOT for the good of the Farmers, NOT For the good of the Soils, NOT to ensure the quality and sustainability of a healthy, nutrient dense food supply; FOR THE MONEY!!!! I continued;
“I have many American friends and colleagues who WISH they could wave a magic wand and wipe Monsanto off the face of the earth and commit their dodgy, unethical practices to the annuls of time. To answer your question as it was written though, We need, as a race, to look deeply at our farming practices and to treat the health of the soils like we should treat our OWN health as human beings.
WE NEED TO STOP THE ALLOPATHIC APPROACH TO SICKNESS AND TO THE PROBLEM OF POOR CROP YIELDS AND REDUCTION IN MICRONUTRIENT DENSITY OF OUR FOOD!
(The allopathic approach is one that is concerned with treating symptoms of disease. For example, you go to the Doctor and complain of a headache and he gives you painkillers. Did he solve the problem? Did he find the CAUSE of the headache? Did he prevent the headache from returning later? No. He simply gave you some medicine to shut you up and get you out of his office. This is akin to driving your car to the mechanic complaining that your oil light keeps blinking. Instead of changing the oil, the mechanic simply places a piece of black tape over the light! Problem Solved right?? Ummmm, No. The GMO solution to world hunger is similar. Instead of reverting to correct farming practices, returning nutrients to our soils and allowing us to create a plentiful and nutritious food supply, Companies like Monsanto are trying to control the food supply for their own gains!)
Correct Farming Practices, crop rotation, biodynamic farming etc are all ways we can do this. If we allow companies like Monsanto in to our culture it perpetuates the myth that this is the only course of action available to us in the fight to Feed the World!
What we need to do is educate the public, the government and others in power that GMO’s are not a sustainable solution, because, for one thing, we still DO NOT know the implications and repercussions of GMO’s on our long term health and how these ‘Frankenfoods’ effect the functioning, reproduction and evolution of our human organism.
If you are Pro-GMO i assume that either you are not fully aware of the alternatives, risks and unanswered questions surrounding GMO’s; or, that you are in someway affiliated with this industry. Either way, perhaps learning a little more about the alternative farming practices, previous studies in to GMO’s and the potential effects of GMO’s on humans would change your opinion in this matter.
I have no agenda here other than to help people achieve the best health possible and to encourage people to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR OWN HEALTH. I truly believe that encouraging companies such as Monsanto to exert their influence in the UK as they have done in the USA would be the beginning of the end as far as the quality of our foods, and therefore the health of our children. You only need to look at the Monsanto boardroom and cross reference this to the movers and shakers in the American Food & Drug Administration to see how big business can influence and corrupt governments! I pray that this NEVER happens in the UK.”
