My Own Health Concerns! (Yes, I’ve been there too!)…
I started out in the fitness industry as a result of spending more than 5 years in a job that I did not enjoy! In fact I started to hate it and it was even starting to affect my mood, energy levels, sleep, and therefore my health! Although I never had to take medication, looking back, I was depressed! I also had a fairly ‘conventional’ approach to healthy eating where I primarily focussed on what the ‘Food Pyramid told me was healthy (as you will see, this is not the road to optimal, or even, good health) After deciding that I needed to make a change I went back to University to study for an Honours degree in Sport and Exercise Science (I had an interest in sports and was always active as a kid so this seemed like a natural path for me) – this happened to be the best decision of my life! After graduating from university I set up my own business offering one on one Personal Training. Unfortunately, the information I learned in mainstream nutrition classes didnt appear to be working! My clients were eating less, doing lots of cardio too but many of them didnt lose an ounce! What was I doing wrong? During this time I was constantly striving to improve my knowledge of health, fitness, and nutrition. I studied for the CHEK Exercise Coach and Holistic Lifestyle Coach certifications course which started to open my eyes to the importance of treating the body holistically. That is, to take in to account each aspect of our health – not just how many calories we consume, but also the quality of the food we consume, our sources of stress, our home and work environment, our movement quality, our rest and recovery, and so on. I hope that it comes across in my writing and videos, but I have a passion for helping people to overcome health problems or obstacles that may be preventing people from really LIVING. We have all experienced health problems, injuries or illness at one time or another but with the right advice and help there is no reason why you cannot overcome them to come back stronger. An area that has really changed my business is Functional Diagnostic Nutrition. Not only does it tie in well with the CHEK Institute approach to health, but it also adds the advantage of state of the art laboratory testing in order to evaluate hormonal imbalances, gastro-intestinal dysfunction, internal pathogens, toxicity, and function.
